Thomas K. Jones
Mr. Jones has provided legal service for clients in a variety of sophisticated tax and corporate legal matters in a number of different industries. Tom has provided services in connection with mergers, acquisitions, dispositions, corporate reorganizations, corporate financing matters and related transactions. He also has assisted in the design of employee benefit plans and has ongoing representation of over ISO closely -held corporations. His representation of his ongoing client base includes advice applicable to legal aspects of day-to-day business operations, employment issues, contract transactions, shareholder issues, tax planning and document preparation. His areas of specialty include corporate and general business law, tax law, partnership and similar entity representation, real estate, probate matters and all aspects of estate planning. He has also provided representation for a number of banks and bank holding companies, in particular with respect to acquisitions and dispositions.
Tom received his undergraduate degree in accounting from the University of Kansas where he was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma and was selected as the outstanding accounting graduate in his class. He passed the CPA exam while a senior at the University of Kansas and then attended the University of Kansas School of Law. He graduated first in his class in 1974 and was admitted to the Order of the Coif.
Upon graduation from law school, Tom worked for one year at a major accounting firm in its tax department. He joined Payne & Jones in 1975 and has practiced continuously with the firm since then. Tom is one of several principals of Payne & Jones, Chartered who have received the prestigious "AV" rating from Martindale-Hubbell.
Tom
has served as an adjunct legal instructor at the University of Kansas in legal
accounting. He is admitted to practice in both Missouri and Kansas, as well
as before the United States Tax Court. He is a member of the Johnson County,
Kansas and American Bar Associations, and he is a member of the Taxation Section
of the ABA. He frequently instructs other lawyers and accountants at Continuing
Legal Education seminars on various aspects of tax, business, and corporate
law, as well as estate planning.
